Paid Search Fraud Protection: Detecting and Blocking Fraudulent Referrals

Automatically detect affiliates who appear to be bidding on your brand keywords via search engines, and optionally block their commissions.

Written by Ani Gupta

Our advanced fraud detection and blocking system is designed to protect your affiliate program by identifying and preventing fraudulent referrals. By detecting suspicious activity—such as affiliates bidding on your brand keywords via search engines—and blocking unauthorized commissions, this feature helps ensure the integrity of your affiliate program.

How It Works

Our system uses multiple layers of verification to monitor referral sources and detect anomalies that may indicate fraudulent activity—primarily when an affiliate is running paid search ads to generate referral sales.

To enable this feature, navigate to the Settings tab in your dashboard and turn on the toggles under Paid Search Fraud Protection.

If you toggle on Enable Fraud Detection, affiliates suspected of running paid ads to drive referral sales will have a warning sign next to their profile. This warning will appear next to the affiliate’s name in the Affiliates tab, Payouts tab, and also on their profile in Social Snowball.

We recommend reviewing flagged affiliate profiles and taking appropriate action, such as contacting or banning them if they violate your affiliate terms and conditions.

To prevent flagged affiliates from receiving commissions, you can also enable the Block Fraudulent Commissions toggle. When enabled:

  • Flagged affiliates will not receive commissions for referrals deemed fraudulent.

  • This automated blocking helps prevent misuse of paid search ads within your affiliate program.

We offer several other ways to mitigate the risk of affiliate fraud. Please refer to this help document for more details.
